ATI Radeon 4800 launch details emerge

More information on the upcoming ATI Radeon 4800 series graphics cards has emerged. According to a report at Tom's Hardware, the first cards will launch mid-June, after Nvidia's GT200.

The new cards will have physics processing capability and prices below $200 for a 512MB card. There will be three major variants of the 4800 series: the 4850, 4870, and 4870 X2. The 4850 will be available at launch and features 512MB of GDDR3 memory plus a single-slot cooler. July will see the launch of the 4870 512MB and 4870 X2 1024MB, both with GDDR5 memory.

There is little to go on with regards to the performance of these new boards, but a single 4870 should be on par with or better than a current 3870 X2. The feature set of the new 4800 series cards includes PCI Express 2.0, DirectX 10.1, and other features in the current 3800 series. The boards will also have HDMI support. ATI is being pro-active on the power consumption front, incorporating ATI's PowerPlay technology into each card to monitor power. A 450W and 550W PSU will be enough to handle single and dual card setups respectively.

The 4850, successor of the 3850, should go for $189 - $219 at launch, while the 4870 will go for $249 - $279.
