Top Desktops for Moms, Dads and Grads

We've gathered together a few of our favorite desktops that have seen release in the last several months. Once again, the Apple iMac takes top honors - and the top spot in our lineup - but this time around, it was no sure thing. Stiff competition from both the Alienware X51 and Lenovo's attractive ThinkCentre Edge 91z should make the iMac take note.

Speaking of that Lenovo 91z, it may come as a bit of a surprise to see us recommend a couple of business desktops for moms and dads out there, but there's a good reason. Many parents rely on their children for tech support, and with kids running off to college, they'll have new things to worry about. Picking up a business computer can be just the thing for empty nesters, since these machines tend to come with better warranty and support options - which can make sorting out computer problems much less daunting.

Apple 27-inch iMacApple iMac 27-inch ** America's #1 Desktop! **
starting at $1699

It's not too surprising that we've chosen Apple's 27-inch iMac as our top desktop pick. As America's #1 desktop, the iMac mixes both function and style in a way that has yet to be matched. The OS X operating system, despite recent issues, it on average safer and easier for new computer users to use. Plus, who doesn't like the Magic Trackpad?

HP TouchSmart 620 3D

HP TouchSmart 620 3D
starting at $1399

HP has been in the touchscreen desktop market for more than five years, now, with each iteration better than the last. The 620 builds upon its predecessor with some impressive new features: a 3D-capable, 120Hz display and twin webcams. But is the premium worth it? If you want to watch 3D movies or play 3D games, then yes. Yes, it is...but be sure to snag it on sale and avoid HP's wildly overpriced upgrades.

Alienware X51
starting at $999

Alienware decided to take the idea of the gaming PC and turn in it on its head when it released the world's first gaming ultraportable in the form of the 11-inch Alienware M11x. The response was overwhelming, and several revisions have followed. Trying to recreate that special moment, Alienware released the X51 slim gaming desktop. Barely bigger than an Xbox 360 or PS3, this machine sets a new trend for gaming hardware.

Dell Vostro 260 Mini
starting at $299

The Dell Vostro 260 Mini is an extremely well-priced desktop that doesn't promise to give you the world - but when most $299 computers get you weak nettop processors, the Vostro 260 manages to pack in desktop-class Intel dual-core CPUs. Its staid black appearance may not win any awards, but it's subtle enough to look appropriate almost anywhere.

Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 91z
starting at $900 - $1000

Hands down, the Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 91z is the sleekest looking business desktop we've ever used. Edge-to-edge glass, a wireless keyboard and mouse, and a sharp, 21.5-inch display all add up to one brilliant looking machine. Backed by Lenovo's stellar three-year warranty, this all-in-one will keep going long after the kids move out.
