Your Face Will Log on to Windows 8

From the beginning, Microsoft has said that they wanted to include and take advantage of much of Kinect's functionality by bringing it to computers running Windows. As the release date for Windows 8 draws nearer, a number of its killer features are starting to leak out, including this one - indicating that Windows 8 might log on to your PC with your face.

Win8Italia is responsible for noticing the library calls whose functionality is listed as "detect human presence." This could mean a number of things, of which facial recognition is merely one. Some of the next-gen Windows' next-gen functionality has been rumored to include 'presence' settings whereby a computer will automatically lock the situation down when it notices you walk away from your desk.

The computer could also take advantage of Windows' build-in fast user switching to immediately go between different accounts on a computer based upon the face of whoever is sitting in front of it. From the very beginning, Microsoft has aimed for Kinect to play a large role in their future not just of gaming, but in the interaction with physical computers too. We're still a long way off from those gorgeous, Minority Report-controlled interfaces. Windows 8, however, might be the first step on the path to getting us there.
